Overview

Psychotherapy is a treatment method for mental health challenges that involves conversations with a licensed mental health professional, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist. It’s also referred to as talk therapy, counseling, or psychosocial therapy.

In psychotherapy, you’ll explore your personal concerns and understand how your thoughts, feelings, and actions influence your emotional well-being. This process empowers you to take charge of your life and develop healthy coping strategies for managing difficult situations.

There are various psychotherapy techniques available, and the one best suited for you will depend on your unique needs and circumstances.

Types Of Psychotherapy

Why it's done

Psychotherapy is effective in treating a wide range of mental health conditions, including:

  • Anxiety disorders, such as social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

  • Mood disorders, including depression and bipolar disorder.

  • Addictions, such as alcohol use disorder, drug dependency, and compulsive gambling.

  • Eating disorders, like anorexia or bulimia.

  • Personality disorders, including borderline personality disorder and dependent personality disorder.

  • Schizophrenia or other conditions that lead to a disconnection from reality.

However, not everyone seeking psychotherapy has a formal diagnosis of a mental illness. Therapy can also be incredibly beneficial for managing the everyday stresses and conflicts that anyone might face.

For example, psychotherapy can help you:

  • Work through relationship issues with a partner or someone else in your life.

  • Alleviate stress or anxiety related to work or other personal situations.

  • Adjust to major life changes, such as a divorce, loss of a loved one, or job loss.

  • Learn how to manage negative reactions like road rage or aggression.

  • Come to terms with a chronic or serious health issue, such as diabetes, cancer, or ongoing pain.

  • Recover from trauma, such as physical or sexual abuse, or witnessing violence.

  • Address sexual health concerns, whether they are related to physical or emotional causes.

  • Improve sleep patterns if you’re struggling with insomnia or disrupted sleep.

In some cases, psychotherapy can be just as effective as medications, such as antidepressants. However, depending on your individual needs, therapy may not be sufficient on its own. Medications or other treatments may also be necessary to fully address the symptoms of a mental health condition.
