As a therapist, you spend a lot of time holding other people’s emotions, uncertainty, grief, and anxiety. This work is meaningful, but it can also place a continuous emotional load on your own nervous system.
Mental health for therapists isn’t just about self-care after work. It’s about creating small recovery moments throughout the day.
1. Create a 5-Minute Transition Ritual
Between sessions:
- Take 1 minute for slow breathing — inhale for 4, exhale for 6.
- Stand up and stretch your shoulders, neck, and chest.
- Ask yourself: “What belongs to my client, and what belongs to me?”
- Drink some water.
- Look outside or step away from your workspace for a minute.
- Give your mind time to close one emotional session before starting another.
2. Reduce Decision Fatigue
- Keep fixed session timings.
- Use simple note templates.
- Maintain a regular lunch and snack routine.
- Keep buffer time after emotionally intense sessions.
- Simplify repetitive daily decisions wherever possible.
